Summary: The Vinaya Piṭaka is the basket of monastic discipline in the Pāli Tipiṭaka. It preserves the rule collections, origin stories, procedural frameworks, and communal legal forms that define the training and governance of the bhikkhu and bhikkhunī saṅghas.
Overview
The Vinaya is not only a list of rules. Its rule analyses combine narrative origin cases, formal rule statements, word explanations, exceptions, and precedent-like applications. The material is therefore both disciplinary and historical: it shows how communal decisions, ordination, confession, residence, robe use, medicines, disputes, and penalties were regulated.

Major divisions
The Theravāda Vinaya is commonly organized into:
