Summary: The Yamakavagga ("Chapter of Pairs") opens the dhammapada with ten matched couplets (yamaka, "pair") contrasting an unwholesome state with its wholesome counterpart. The pairing exposes a single principle from two sides — a negative and a positive — so each teaching is grasped in its full dimension.

Themes

Each pair in this vagga turns on one axis:

  • Intention and its fruit (Dhp 1–2): corrupt vs pure intent produce suffering vs happiness — see mental causation mano pubbangama
  • Grudge and its cessation (Dhp 3–5): harboring vs releasing resentment — see non hatred avera
  • Restraint and its absence (Dhp 7–8): sense-restraint as protection against mara
  • Outer robe, inner worthiness (Dhp 9–10): one is worthy of the robe only when inwardly pure
  • Essence and non-essence (Dhp 11–12): right view vs wrong view of what matters
  • The roofed and unroofed mind (Dhp 13–14): an untrained mind is penetrated by lust as rain seeps into a poorly roofed house
  • Grief and rejoicing in both worlds (Dhp 15–18): the evildoer grieves here and hereafter; the meritorious rejoices here and hereafter
  • Practice vs recitation (Dhp 19–20): reciting much without practising profits nothing

The Pali root edition (Mahāsaṅgīti) preserves vatthu names as in-line segments (e.g. dhp1:0.4 = Cakkhupālattheravatthu). These are commentary-era editorial headers rather than canonical text, and are therefore not rendered in Sujato's English. They are preserved here under Traditional vatthu with clear commentary flagging per the doctrinal-safety rule in CLAUDE.md.
