Summary: The Vibhaṅga ("Analysis") is the second book of the Abhidhamma Piṭaka. It provides a systematic and exhaustive analysis of eighteen major doctrinal topics, ranging from the aggregates and sense bases to mindfulness and jhāna. Its defining feature is the use of the Bhājanīya method, which typically pairs a sutta-facing exposition (Suttantabhājanīya) with a technical Abhidhamma analysis (Abhidhammabhājanīya), effectively serving as a bridge between the two styles (Vibh 1, Vibh 6, Vibh 7, Vibh 12, Vibh 18).
Overview
The Vibhaṅga is organized into eighteen independent divisions (vibhaṅgas), each focusing on a specific doctrinal set:
- Khandhavibhaṅga — aggregates khandha
- Āyatanavibhaṅga — sense bases ayatana
- Dhātuvibhaṅga — elements dhatu
- Saccavibhaṅga — truths sacca
- Indriyavibhaṅga — faculties indriya
- Paṭiccasamuppādavibhaṅga — Dependent Origination
- Satipaṭṭhānavibhaṅga — Mindfulness
- Sammappadhānavibhaṅga — Right Effort
- Iddhipādavibhaṅga — Bases of Power
- Bojjhaṅgavibhaṅga — Awakening Factors
- Maggaṅgavibhaṅga — Path Factors
- Jhānavibhaṅga — Jhāna
- Appamaññāvibhaṅga — Immeasurables
- Sikkhāpadavibhaṅga — Training Rules
- Paṭisambhidāvibhaṅga — Discriminations
- Ñāṇavibhaṅga — Knowledge
- Khuddakavatthuvibhaṅga — Miscellaneous Topics
- Dhammahadayavibhaṅga — Final Summary Compendium
Significance: The Bhājanīya Method
The Vibhaṅga is unique for explicitly showing the transition from the narrative and person-centered language of the suttas to the abstract and impersonal language of the Abhidhamma. Most chapters follow a three-part structure:
- Suttantabhājanīya: Defines the topic using phrases and categories found in the Nikāyas.
- Abhidhammabhājanīya: Re-analyzes the same topic using the pure "Enumeration of Phenomena" (Dhammasaṅgaṇī) idiom.
- Pañhāpucchaka (Question-and-Answer): Interrogates the topic using the triadic and dyadic matrices (matika matrices), testing its relationship to ethics, causality, and meditative states.
Structure
The text moves from foundational ontological maps (1-5) to the dynamics of the path and meditation (7-13), culminating in a series of technical classifications and the final "Heart of the Dhamma" summary (14-18).
- Ontology — The opening five divisions (Aggregates, Sense Bases, Elements, Truths, Faculties) provide the structural analysis of reality that underpins the entire system (Vibh 1-5).
- The Path — The middle divisions restate the core components of the Buddhist path (Mindfulness, Right Effort, etc.) as objective phenomena to be understood rather than just instructions to be followed (Vibh 7-11).
- Final Compendium — The Dhammahadayavibhaṅga provides a rapid survey of core categories across the various realms of existence, acting as a technical summary for the entire book (Vibh 18).
Key themes
- aggregates khandha — Approached through both sutta definitions and Abhidhamma matrices (Vibh 1).
- sense bases ayatana — Analyzing the twelve bases of experience (Vibh 2).
- elements dhatu — Analyzing the eighteen elements of sensory experience (Vibh 3).
- truths sacca — Analyzing the four noble truths in technical detail (Vibh 4).
- faculties indriya — Analyzing the twenty-two faculties of life and mind (Vibh 5).
- consciousness citta — Approached through viññāṇakkhandha and manoviññāṇadhātu (Vibh 1, Vibh 3).
- matter rupa — Approached through rūpakkhandha and the sensory bases (Vibh 1, Vibh 2).
How to read
Where a division has both a Suttantabhājanīya and an Abhidhammabhājanīya, read the first as the sutta-facing presentation of the topic and the second as its tighter categorical restatement. That movement is especially visible in the analyses of the aggregates, dependent origination, mindfulness, and jhāna (Vibh 1, Vibh 6, Vibh 7, Vibh 12).
Some divisions do not follow that exact rhythm. The Indriyavibhaṅga and Sikkhāpadavibhaṅga enter directly through Abhidhamma analysis, and the final Dhammahadayavibhaṅga becomes a condensed survey rather than a paired exposition, so the page does not force one single substructure onto every book (Vibh 5, Vibh 14, Vibh 18).
For source handling in this repo, pali-ms.txt is the canonical alignment grid, while pali-bjt.txt and si-bjt.txt preserve the Buddha Jayanthi page-entry segmentation in native form. The page therefore cites canonical Vibh references and the Mahāsaṅgīti grid while leaving the BJT files unresegmented.
Textual notes
- The Mahāsaṅgīti Pali (
pali-ms.txt) uses the SuttaCentral alignment grid withvb1-vb18division IDs, while the Buddha Jayanthi Pali and Sinhala files preserve nativeap-vbh:<page>.<entry>page-entry IDs. The two segmentation systems are both retained rather than mechanically forced into one another. - This round has no in-scope English translation for the Vibhaṅga. The current page is therefore grounded in the authoritative Pali and the available Sinhala raw files rather than quoting an English canonical translation.
- The page keeps the book's internal irregularities explicit instead of smoothing them away: some divisions begin straight with Abhidhamma analysis, and the final Dhammahadayavibhaṅga is a summary compendium rather than another paired exposition (Vibh 5, Vibh 14, Vibh 18).
- Raw commentary for the Sammohavinodanī is present separately under
raw/commentaries/atthakatha/abhidhamma/vibhanga/. Commentary Pali and Sinhala native entry counts do not align exactly there, so commentary remains a separately flagged layer rather than being folded into canonical prose on this page.
