Summary: The Brāhmaṇavagga redefines the "brahmin" not by birth, family, or ascetic display, but as the person who has cut fetters, abandoned craving, perfected restraint, and reached liberation (Dhp 383–423). Across its long refrain — "that’s who I declare a brahmin" — the chapter steadily identifies the true brāhmaṇa with the arahant ideal: detached, harmless, patient, wise, and beyond renewed becoming.

Themes

  • The chapter begins by cutting through becoming: the opening verses call the brahmin to cut the stream, abandon sensual pleasures, know the ending of formations, and realize the uncreated (Dhp 383–386).
  • "Brahmin" is ethical and soteriological, not hereditary: birth, matted hair, lineage, and outer marks are explicitly denied as decisive, while truth, Dhamma, purity, and relinquishment are affirmed instead (Dhp 388, 393–396).
  • Non-retaliation and restraint are central marks: the chapter praises one who neither strikes nor retaliates, harms no beings, speaks truth gently, and is restrained in body, speech, and mind (Dhp 389–391, 405–409).
  • The refrain maps the arahant profile: again and again the true brahmin is the one who has cut fetters, laid down burdens, crossed the flood, ended craving, and become unyoked from all bonds (Dhp 397–418, 420–423).
  • The close gathers the liberated sage's knowledge and finish: the final verses describe the perfected one as unstirred, awakened, free from destiny-tracking by gods and humans, and at the completion of the holy life (Dhp 419–423).

Textual notes

  • Throughout this chapter, brāhmaṇa is a title of spiritual attainment, not a validation of hereditary status. Dhp 393 and Dhp 396 make that explicit by rejecting birth and lineage as the criterion.
  • Dhp 389–390 require caution in English because "brahmin" here names the liberated practitioner described by the chapter's refrain, not a social class as such. The verses condemn both assault and retaliation, and the page keeps that ethical force without extending the passage into wider caste-history claims.
  • The repeated refrain "that’s who I declare a brahmin" steadily overlaps with established arahant language: taints ended, fetters cut, burden laid down, non-grasping, and final body (for example Dhp 397, 400, 402, 420). This page therefore links the chapter to arahant rather than treating "brahmin" as an unrelated ideal.
  • Dhp 419–423 close with knowledge formulas — knowing beings' passing away and rebirth, knowing past lives, and reaching the end of rebirth. In this chapter they function as part of the culmination rhetoric of liberation; the page does not generalize them beyond what the verses themselves affirm.
