Summary: The Bhikkhuvagga (The Mendicant) defines a bhikkhu through restraint, contentment, wise speech, and meditative discipline rather than robe or status alone (Dhp 360–376). Its later verses tighten the frame further: the true mendicant is peaceable, self-guarded, joyful in the Buddha's teaching, and oriented to nibbāna through the union of collectedness and wisdom (Dhp 377–382).
Themes
- The bhikkhu is marked by restraint: the chapter opens by moving across the sense doors, body, speech, and mind until full restraint becomes the condition for release from suffering (Dhp 360–362).
- Speech and study remain part of the training: restrained, meaningful speech and recollection of Dhamma keep the mendicant from decline (Dhp 363–364).
- Contentment protects meditation: envy, comparison, and impure livelihood obstruct samādhi, while modest support borne well is praised even by the devas (Dhp 365–366).
- The chapter turns inward toward liberation: non-appropriation of name-and-form, loving-kindness, cutting greed and hate, and the crossing of the flood all shift the ideal bhikkhu toward arahantship (Dhp 367–374).
- Early discipline and mature peace belong together: guarding the senses, contentment, and pātimokkha restraint are the beginning of the path, while joy in the Buddha's teaching culminates in stillness and moon-like clarity (Dhp 375–382).

Textual notes
- Dhp 360–361 are deliberately cumulative. The first verse names four sense doors, while the next widens restraint to body, speech, and mind before concluding that comprehensive restraint is the release-condition.
- Dhp 365–366 use alms-support and comparison to probe the inner life of a renunciant. The problem is not poverty or abundance in themselves, but conceit, envy, and impure livelihood as obstacles to collectedness.
- Dhp 370 is intentionally terse about its three sets of "five". The verse clearly presents a training formula of abandoning, relinquishing, and developing, but later Theravāda traditions specify the lists in more detail than the verse itself does; this page keeps the wording at the canonical level.
- Dhp 372–374 pair collectedness and insight rather than allowing either to stand alone. The chapter's meditative center is not bare absorption but the combination of jhāna, wisdom, and insight into the aggregates' rise and fall.
