Summary: The Taṇhāvagga (Craving) treats taṇhā not as a single desire but as the proliferating root that keeps beings leaping from object to object, renewing sorrow and rebirth (Dhp 334–348). Its closing movement contrasts the growth of craving through beauty-fixation with the ending of craving through disciplined attention, then turns to the unsurpassed gift of Dhamma and the superior fruit of giving to those freed from greed, hate, delusion, and desire (Dhp 349–359).

Themes

  • Craving spreads unless uprooted: heedless living lets craving grow like a creeper, and suffering returns again and again while its root remains intact (Dhp 334–340).
  • Pleasure-seeking is a rebirth-mechanism: delight in pleasing experience becomes the stream, snare, and bond that carries beings back into birth, aging, and pain (Dhp 341–347).
  • Release requires letting go across time: the chapter's center of gravity is relinquishment of past, future, and present attachment so one may go beyond becoming (Dhp 348).
  • Mental training cuts the bond: Dhp 349–350 opposes beauty-fascination and proliferating thought with mindful calming and asubha contemplation as craving-countermeasures.
  • The chapter ends in gift and fruit: the Dhamma is the highest gift and giving to the defilement-free is most fruitful because the final verses recast greed, hate, delusion, and desire as the true weeds in the field of the world (Dhp 354–359).

Textual notes

  • The chapter uses several plant images for taṇhā — creeper, grass, weed, and root — to stress that craving is not merely episodic wanting but a regenerative structure that must be uprooted rather than trimmed (Dhp 334–340, 356–359).
  • Dhp 349–350 stays within a renunciant meditation register. The contrast is between proliferating lustful attention and disciplined contemplation of unattractiveness (asubha) as a remedy for sensual fixation; the page does not generalize this into a blanket denigration of bodies or beauty.
  • Dhp 353 is spoken in the Buddha's first person and stands apart from the surrounding third-person verses. Within this chapter it functions as the strongest statement of liberation through the ending of craving, not as a general invitation to self-authorize doctrine.
  • Dhp 354–359 pivot from inner release to generosity. The sequence does not discard the craving theme; it shows that the most fruitful field of giving is the person freed from the very weeds the chapter has been tracing.
