Summary: Chattapāṇi is traditionally presented (per Dhammapada-aṭṭhakathā) as a lay non-returner who remained unaffected by King Pasenadi's displeasure when he did not rise to honour the king — precisely because, as a non-returner, he had transcended the categories the king represented. The Dhp-a pairs the episode with Dhp 51–52 (the sweet-speaking but fruitless flower / the fruitful one). The canonical suttas do not name him; the story is commentarial. (commentary — not canonical)
