Summary: The Udāyi of Dhp 64 (per Dhammapada-aṭṭhakathā) is traditionally identified as Lāḷudāyi, a bhikkhu who would expound teachings he did not understand and was rebuked or silenced on several occasions. The Dhp-a occasions Dhp 64 (even if a fool attends a sage for a lifetime, he grasps no more of the Dhamma than a spoon grasps the taste of soup) with this figure. The canonical Sutta-piṭaka contains several Udāyis; care is required in identification.

Three distinct Udāyis are canonically attested:

  • Kāḷudāyi (Kāḷa-Udāyi) — Sakyan noble, childhood companion of the Buddha, later chief among those who please the family (AN 1.225 (cited; not yet ingested))
  • Mahā-Udāyi — a different elder
  • Lāḷudāyi — the Dhp-a's identification for Dhp 64; canonical attestation thin
