Summary: The Dukapaṭṭhāna is a major division of the Paṭṭhāna. It applies the twenty-four conditional relations to the hundred dyads (duka) of the Abhidhamma matrix. It explores the causal relations between pairs of dhammas (like roots and non-roots, or mundane and supramundane). (Patth 2)

Canonical locus

The Dukapaṭṭhāna follows the division on triads, extending the conditional analysis to the remaining categories of the mātikā.

Patth 2.1 (patthana2.1:2.1)
Hetuṁ dhammaṁ paṭicca hetu dhammo uppajjati hetupaccayā.

>

"Dependent on a dhamma that is a cause, a dhamma that is a cause arises by way of cause-condition."

Analysis

The Dukapaṭṭhāna applies the same rigorous combinatorial method as the tikapatthana, but focused on pairs: (Patth 2)

  1. Duka-duka: Interactions within a single dyad.
  2. Complex combinations: As the book progresses, it begins to combine triads and dyads (e.g., Duka-tika and Tika-duka), testing how members of a triad relate to members of a dyad.

This division ensures that no technical category from the Abhidhamma system is left without a clear causal definition. (Patth 2)

Textual notes

  • The Dukapaṭṭhāna is significantly more diverse than the Tikapaṭṭhāna due to the larger number of dyads (100 vs 22).
  • It frequently uses abbreviations (pe) pointing back to the standard patterns established in the first book.
