Definition: Appamāda denotes sustained, self-aware vigilance in the training — not a momentary act but a settled stance in which mindfulness, effort, and restraint are continuously engaged. In the canon it functions as a summary term for the whole of the practical path.

Canonical usage

Dhp 21 (dhp21:1–21:2)
Appamādo amatapadaṁ, pamādo maccuno padaṁ.

>

English (Sujato): Heedfulness is the state free of death; heedlessness is the state of death.
Dhp 26 (dhp26:3–26:4)
Appamādañca medhāvī, dhanaṁ seṭṭhaṁva rakkhati.

>

English (Sujato): But the wise protect diligence as their best treasure.
DN 16 (Mahāparinibbāna) — the Buddha's final utterance (cited; not yet ingested)
Appamādena sampādetha. — "Strive with heedfulness."

Nuances and translation notes

Translators diverge on the core rendering:

  • Sujato: "heedfulness" (preserves the a- prefix); sometimes "diligence" when context emphasises effort
  • Buddharakkhita: "heedfulness"
  • Thanissaro: "heedfulness"
  • Norman (PTS): "vigilance"
  • de Zoysa (Sinhala): අප්‍රමාදය — direct Sinhala cognate, preserving the Indic register

The negative form ("heedfulness" as "non-negligence") better captures the Pali construction — appamāda is defined in contrast to pamāda rather than as a standalone positive virtue. English "diligence" captures the behavioural fruit but loses the analytical pairing.

  • pamada — its antonym; the state appamāda negates
  • sati — mindfulness; appamāda is often glossed commentarially as satiyā avippavāso ("non-separation from mindfulness")
  • viriya — energy, effort — the faculty appamāda sustains (pending)
  • saddha — faith / confidence; together with sati, viriya, samādhi, paññā, one of the five faculties that appamāda orchestrates (pending)
