Summary: Kosiya-seṭṭhi, traditionally epithet Macchariya ("miserly"), is the canonical prototype of the miserly householder in the Dhammapada-aṭṭhakathā narrative tradition. According to Dhp-a on Dhp 49, he is converted through the psychic intervention of Mahāmoggallāna, who causes him to experience his hoarded riches as worthless. The Dhp-a pairs the conversion with Dhp 49 (the bee-simile: the muni takes only the essence and does no harm to the flower). The story is commentarial. (commentary — not canonical)
