Definition: In the Dhātukathā, saṅgahita is one of the four primary relational operators used to analyze phenomena. It denotes that a particular phenomenon is "included" within a specific Abhidhamma category—typically one of the aggregates (khandha), sense bases (āyatana), or elements (dhātu).

Canonical usage

The Dhātukathā uses saṅgahita to establish the fundamental classification of any given dhamma relative to the primary Abhidhamma grids.

Dhk 2.1 (dt2.1:1.1–1.2)
Rūpakkhandho katihi khandhehi katihāyatanehi katihi dhātūhi saṅgahito? Rūpakkhandho ekena khandhena ekādasahāyatanehi ekādasahi dhātūhi saṅgahito.

>

"...Are [they] included in the five aggregates, twelve bases, and eighteen elements?"

Nuances and translation notes

  • Saṅgahita establishes a relationship of "membership" or "comprising". If a phenomenon belongs to the material side of existence, it is said to be saṅgahita (included) within the rūpakkhandha (aggregate of matter).
  • This operator is the inverse of exclusion asangahita.
