Summary: Ānanda-seṭṭhi is a wealthy banker (seṭṭhi) of Sāvatthī in the Dhammapada-aṭṭhakathā tradition, whose extreme avarice and determination to pass his hoards to his son lead, after his death, to a rebirth as a slum-dwelling beggar's child who tries in vain to reach his own former wealth. The Dhp-a occasions Dhp 62 (sons mine, wealth mine — the fool torments himself) with this narrative. The canonical suttas do not name him; the story is commentarial. (commentary — not canonical)
This figure is distinct from the elder Ānanda, the Buddha's personal attendant. The name Ānanda was common.
